However, it takes some time to learn the software, as this is packed with options and the few functions needed for our purpose are sometimes difficult to find within the complex software. This new method is much faster than the traditional way of making illustrations. ![]() There is no danger that valuable illustrations might get lost in the mail. For publication these plates can be exported to a variety of file formats, burned on a CD-ROM and sent along with the manuscript to the editor. ![]() If desired the habitus drawing can be shaded, after importing the drawing into Adobe Photoshop. Scalebars can be adjusted, lettering and arrows can be added very quickly. ![]() As Adobe Illustrator drawings are in a vector format, the lines will not become rough after enlargement of the drawing, as occurs with bitmap graphics. After making the detailed drawings these can quickly be arranged into plates each detail can be scaled to the preferred size or rotated. Small details or confusing areas in the pencil drawing, such as dense fields of setae, can be enormously (up to 6400%) enlarged on the computer screen, whereas in the traditional ink drawing magnifying glasses are needed to be able to draw these details correctly. Afterwards the systematist can easily correct the parts that are not drawn perfectly. With this excellent possibility of correction, the drawings on the computer can be made by technical staff or even inexperienced volunteers. Trying this on drafting film is very difficult or impossible. Another important advantage is the possibility to correct parts of the drawing. Thus shaky lines known from inking on drafting film become a thing of the past.
